“Zoey”
When Zoey was about 5
months old she saved my life - literally! I
was cooking by the stove, wearing a loose
fuzzy velour top, and all of the sudden Zoey,
who was in the kitchen with me, began to
cry extremely loudly. Startled by her loud
cry, I looked down at Zoey over my right
shoulder saying to Zoey, "What's the matter
baby?" A flame caught my eye and I whirled
around thinking something on the counter in
back of me was on fire, but it was not the
back counter. I quickly realized it was me -
my top was on fire from an ember from the
stove that must have caught the back of
my sleeve. The fire had traveled up my arm,
working its way up my my back. I quickly
moved to the sink, turned on the faucet and
put my shoulder and arm under cold running
water, then pulled off my top to make sure
the flames were out. By the burned away
fabric of my top, I could see the fire had
been making it's way up towards my hair.
Another few seconds and my hair would have
gone up in flame. It's funny, but I did not
feel pain until later, while this was
happening I just felt a sensation of heat,
which I thought was just my cooking
circulating around me so I didn't pay
attention to it. I did end up with burn
blisters from my wrist to my elbow, but it
was treated with a prescription burn cream.
If it wasn't for Zoey warning me about the
flames - well, I hate to think what would
have happened if I had taken even a few more
seconds to put out the flames. My little
Zoey truly saved my life by alerting me to
the fire. Zoey and I had a special
relationship. She made different sounds that
I could distinguish - like a certain call
that sounded like "Ma", that she made when
she wanted me. She was also quite able to
say "No" when she didn't want to be
disturbed or didn't want me to do something.
Sounds crazy - I know, but it's true.
Although Zoey had claws, she used to stroke
my face in the most gentle way and she woke
me up in the morning by licking my cheek
with her rough little tongue. Zoey was
16 3/4 years old when she died. She had
kidney disease. I think of her every day and
will forever miss her very much - she will
be my little hero always. Thanks for
posting Zoey's memorial - the staff of
Manhattan Cats specialists are wonderful -
thank you for taking care of both me and
Zoey. Sincerely, Carin Blankoff
