New Hope for Senior Cats with

Age-Related Behavior Changes

New Hope for Senior Cats with Age-Related Behavior Changes

Advances in feline veterinary care and nutrition have resulted in an increase in lifespan, and an increase in the population of geriatric cats.  Accompanying this increase are the expected increases in geriatric diseases, including age-related behavior changes, or Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS).  It is estimated that CDS occurs in at least 28% of cats aged 11 to 14, and in over 50% of cats 15 years of age or older.  The most commonly observed behavior changes include confusion (for example, getting trapped in corners), altered relationships with owners or other cats, irritability, anxiety or decreased response to stimuli, changes in sleep/wake patterns, inappropriate vocalization (crying loudly at night, for example), altered learning or memory (for example, housesoiling), strange changes in activity (aimless wandering or pacing), decreased grooming, and temporal disorientation (for example, forgetting that they’ve just been fed). Recently, a new supplement has become available to treat CDS in cats.  The product, Novifit-S, is tablet that is given once daily.  If you think your geriatric cat may be experiencing age-related behavioral changes, give our hospital a call, and a doctor or technician can give you more information about this new medication.
